2020 Chevrolet Bolt vs 2020 Kia Soul EV

Purchasing an electric vehicle has become a little more complicated in recent years with the arrival of several new models. If we are seeing such growth in the electric vehicle segment, it's in part thanks to the Chevrolet Bolt. The latter arrived in 2017 and changed the landscape of the electric car in Canada.

Before the Chevrolet Bolt came on the scene, we only had the Nissan LEAF and a few other affordable electric models. There was the Tesla Model S, but it was overpriced for most budgets. However, the LEAF offered less than 200 kilometers of range which was largely insufficient for the needs of most buyers.

The Bolt then arrived with 383 kilometers of range and a price below $ 45,000. It forced manufacturers to improve their product and now we have several new models with more range like the 2020 Kia Soul EV. That said, when we compare the Bolt and the Soul EV, we realize that the Chevrolet still has the advantage.

More range for less in the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt

Let's quickly compare the specifications of the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt. This year it gets more range so that it now offers 417 miles of range. It's more than any other electric vehicle in this price range including the base Tesla Model 3 and the Kia Soul EV. The Bolt recharges in 9.0 hours and costs $ 44,998. It is therefore entitled to government rebates of up to $ 13,000.

The Kia Soul EV is available in two versions. The Soul EV Premium is offered with an electric motor that develops 134 horsepower, much less than the 200 horsepower of the Bolt. In addition, the range of the Soul EV Premium is only 248 kilometers. It would be fine if it was more affordable than the Bolt, but with a starting price of $ 44,505 it really isn't.

For more range in the Kia Soul EV, you have to opt for the EV Limited which offers 201 horsepower and 383 kilometers of range. The problem with this model is that it costs $ 53,505, more than $ 8,000 more than the Bolt without offering more range.
