2020 Chevrolet Bolt vs. 2020 Volkswagen eGolf: Extended Range, Power and Volume

The Chevrolet Bolt is a winning combination of electric vehicle range and affordability. Recently updated with increased range, customers who didn't consider buying electric before now own one. The Bolt is also respected on the road for its power and torque, which are well above average for a subcompact vehicle. However, the Bolt is not alone in its class, and competitors continue to try to emulate the success of the Bolt.

Here, we compare the Bolt to the Volkswagen eGolf.

The Chevrolet Bolt is more than just another energy-efficient EV

The Bolt features an electric drive system that outputs 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Compared to gas-only, hybrid, and other PHEV subcompacts, this power is impressive. That's plenty of oomph to manage through traffic and pass on the highway. However, the eGolf doesn't quite match this capability. With only 134 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque, you'll have reduced performance as your load increases.

Even with significantly more power, the Bolt has a combined efficiency that matches the lower-powered eGolf at 2.0 Le/100 km. You get much more for the power when you drive the Bolt.

The Bolt features an outstanding range of up to 417 km, which is over twice the range of the eGolf's 198 km. Engineers recently redesigned the battery's chemistry to extend its range, demonstrating Chevrolet's commitment to providing an EV that does more for you.

The Chevrolet Bolt is more spacious than you think

The interior of the Bolt provides more opportunities to feel comfortable. With space at a premium in these subcompacts, the Bolt extends the right spots. The front seats have more legroom and headroom than the eGolf, and the rear seats feature more legroom.

The Bolt has more cargo volume than some compact SUVs. Just fold down the rear seats, and the Bolt will share with you up to 1,603 litres. This extends your lifestyle, giving you more room to do more. The eGolf offers less—just 1,492 litres—which makes a big difference in a subcompact vehicle.

The Bolt offers other features such as Target Charge Level mode. You can set a charging level so you only take the energy you need. Location-Based Charging reduces your electric bill by programming your Bolt to charge during off-peak hours for the best rate.
