GM's Electric Strategy: Revolutionary
January 19 2021,
Several manufacturers are at the heart of an electric shift at the beginning of this decade. This of course includes General Motors (GM), which recently gave us an overview of its electrification strategy. The least we can say is that it is revolutionary in every way.
In fact, GM isn't just attacking a particular segment or going in with a linear approach. The American giant is in fact firing in all directions with an approach that is nothing short of impressive. Let's see what the company recently unveiled at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas.
First of all, we were able to see some models that are about to arrive, but also that will soon be with us. We can think of the Cadillac Lyric SUV, but also the Celestiq sedan that was recently announced. As for Chevrolet, the next big news will be the Bolt EUV SUV, which is scheduled to debut this year. GM even showed a video that gives us a glimpse of one of the features it will inherit, namely the semi-autonomous Super Cruise driving system. Introduced with the Cadillac CT6 a few years ago, we'll see it for the first time on a product other than a Cadillac.
We also got to see the GMC Hummer EV that will make its debut later this year, a model that's eagerly awaited, but that will also make some small ones. Indeed, during GM's presentation at CES, it was possible to see another pickup truck in the background, a model that seemed to take the shape of the Chevrolet Colorado. We know that Chevrolet will have an electric version of its Silverado, just as GMC will have an all-electric variant of its Sierra model.
Other vehicles were also briefly shown, but since the presentation was virtual, their identity remains a bit of a secret. Nonetheless, new SUVs carrying Buick's logo seem to be in the plans, as well as an SUV with the Corvette’s design. Yes, the company would be working on an electrified and utility version of the famous Corvette.
There was even talk of self-drive shuttles and flying cabs at CES.
Over the next few years, GM is expected to offer 30 electric vehicles around the world. In the near future, a dozen products are expected.
But that's not all. GM has also introduced a new division called BrightDrop. This division is designed to help companies and will offer various solutions in this regard. For example, we saw the EP1, an electric pallet capable of carrying up to 200 pounds and moving autonomously. And for the delivery of larger packages, the company will offer the EV600, a van that will use the powertrain of the GMC Hummer EV to offer capacity and autonomy. The first 500 will be delivered to FedEx.
And to underline all this, the ultimate transformation is the company's logo. The latter, now more stylized, represents the company's electrified future.
